When you are ready for a new hairstyle but do not know what will suit you best, your face shape is one of the most important factors to consider. That is because no matter which hairstyle you choose, if it does not work with the natural shape of your face, it is not going to look good.
Figuring out your face shape is relatively simple. All you need to do is look at a selfie with your hair pulled back. Then, look at your face and figure out which shape it most closely resembles. This guide will review hairstyles for rectangle, oval, square, and round face shapes.
Rectangle Face Hairstyles
Work to soften the defining lines of your jaw and forehead with a soft-layered cut. This can enhance your cheekbones and help disguise the corners of your face. Make sure you avoid overly long styles because they can make your face look longer. If you totally love long hair, try for a blowout, waves, or curls – anything that will add horizontal volume to your hair. For an updo, choose something soft and elegant over a high bun. Keep your bangs, soft with rounded fringe instead of square styles or a blunt cut option.
Oval Face Hairstyles
Oval face shapes can pull off just about any hairstyle. If you are really trying to turn heads, think about long tresses or a short cute crop cut. Blunt bobs with subtle layers are on trend and perfect for an oval face. Make sure to add side-swept bangs to complete the look. For long hair options, think about minimal layers, or style your hair with waves and curls. Be careful to avoid long bands and one-length hairstyles.
Square Face Hairstyles
A wide, broad forehead, wide cheekbones, and a strong jaw mean that selecting a cut that softens your features is ideal. Side parted styles help to offset the natural squareness of your face and help disguise the sharp angles. A short, layered bob is perfect for a cropped length hairstyle. Make sure to add side-swept bangs to help draw attention to your cheekbones instead of your jawline. Wide curls and slick back looks are not going to suit square face hairstyle. Instead, think about straight hair with long layers or short subtle bangs.
Round Face Hairstyles
If your face is round, it is probably just about, as long as it is wide. Choose a hairstyle that adds definition and shape to your face. Long layered cuts or a choppy short cut is perfectly suited for round faces. If you want long locks, try staggered layers that start around the jaw. Make sure to avoid bobs and single length cuts with short layers that can balloon around your face. Wispy bangs and wide curls are only going to make your face look rounder, so avoid those.
Instead of leaning on the latest trends, choose a style that suits your face instead. The right cut will expertly frame and balance it and help highlight all of your best features.
